After graduating from the University of
Kentucky, David O. Lykins, Jr. formed Lykins Enterprises, Inc. in
1977. He started his career in the petroleum business by being an
Ashland Oil agent, with one small tankwagon. After two years, and
being confined to only one county by Ashland Oil, Inc., he decided
to go on his own as an independent jobber. The following four years
he grew from zero gallons to over twelve million gallons
annually. He realized that buying from oil companies on ten
day terms, and selling to customers on thirty day terms soon caused
a cash flow crunch. The answer to this dilemma was to sell his
product for cash, which led to the construction of his first
convenience store in 1983. After continually being
confused with Lykins Oil (no relation) of Milford, Ohio he
decided to change the name of the wholesale division to Lyco Fuels. Over the years the company has delivered fuel to river boats,
freight trains, schools, coal mines, power plants, country grocery
stores, bluegrass horse farms and everything in between. This wealth
of experience has led to the company having customers from
Pikeville, Kentucky to Broadway Street in downtown Lexington. The
company now specializes in branding convenience stores, however
commercial accounts are still a very important part of our business.
The company has grown from buying only unbranded products, to
having jobberships with two of the leading petroleum companies in the
world. We are proud to represent Shell and Chevron. The
one convenience store has now grown into a sixteen store chain, known as
Gasoline Alley. David O. Lykins, Jr. remains the CEO of Lykins
Enterprises, Inc. and his son David "Trey" Lykins directs the
operations of the Gasoline Alley stores. His son Matthew heads
up the wholesale division of Lyco Fuels. Terry Tipton, formerly with
Apollo Oil, has joined our team, specializing in branding
convenience stores. Mark Ruggles, an eleven year employee, heads up
the Lyco Transport division. The company's
direction today is growing the Shell and Chevron brands, by
branding convenience stores. The company is located on a ten acre complex at 3197 AA Highway Maysville,
Kentucky.
